The Phoenix, the immortal totem of Chinese rebirth through fire, embodies the millennium-old soul of the konghou. The Honghu—a sacred white phoenix—lends its name and essence to Lucina Yue, the leading figure of a new generation in globalizing the konghou. As a pioneer of modern Chinese konghou art in the Eastern United States, a founding ambassador of its overseas dissemination, and one of the most influential young virtuosos of the instrument, Yue channels the transcendent spirit of the Honghu in this album.
Transcendent Phoenix (鸿鹄·箜篌秘境), mastered by 30-time Grammy-winning legend Alan Silverman, captures the album’s seismic emotional tension and spiritual ascent. It is a symphonic journey where the konghou’s voice oscillates between crystalline ice and blazing fire—a phoenix’s rebirth rendered in sound.4 e2 P& u. s- I9 V3 ~( I1 D
For the recording process, Shao-Ting Sun, a Golden Melody Award-winning engineer, developed a proprietary microphone technique across New York’s premier studios to immortalize each shimmering vibration. The album showcases transcendent collaborations with distinguished musicians: Susan Jolles (Lifetime Achievement Award, American Harp Society; member of many ensembles including the Jubal Trio, American Composers Orchestra, Percussia, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra); Qiang Tu (cellist, New York Philharmonic; professor at Manhattan School of Music and former teacher at Beijing Central Conservatory); Nan-Cheng Chen (principal cello, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra); Chang Pan (principal cello, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra); and Gabriel Globus-Hoenich (founder of People of Earth, percussionist).2 J7 _' N+ K7 z8 R7 x
The composers featured span generations and cultural backgrounds, weaving together Chan meditation music, Chinese classical masterpieces, East-West chamber fusion, and contemporary works. The album transitions effortlessly between orchestral grandeur and whispered intimacy. In addition to the Chinese classic 'Sunset over the Flute and Drum', six reimagined works are presented by Dongqing Fang (winner of the Golden Bell Award and Shanghai Spring International Composition Competition), Tian Tian (Gold Medalist, George Enescu International Composition Competition), and Sam Wu (top honoree, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards). The finale is Earth (Drunken Sage in the Mud), composed by Mr. Xijin Liu (National Class-A composer, former president of the Chinese Nationalities Orchestra Society), inspired by Mr. Yu Xi’s allegorical novel The Legend of Prabhutaratna.
